In case anyone isn't clear, the "multimedia" speakers supplied for use
with computers include their own built in amplifiers, and should be
connected to a line level output (around 1 volt) such as the twin phonos
on the back of an Amiga or the headphone output on the ront of a CD-ROM
drive.

Ordinary hi-fi speakers do not include their own amplifiers (except a
few very expensive models) and should be connected to the speaker
outputs of an amplifier or music centre.

The difference is that a line level connection links the two circuits so
that they are at the same voltage, with as little current flowing as
possible, while a speaker connection carries the (often large) amounts
of current needed to drive the cones in and out. So a speaker output
uses big tough transistors. (Speakers often, but not always, use a
higher voltage than line level, too - depends on the volume control
setting.)

A headphone output is somewhere between the two.

When shopping for good used hi-fi gear, NAD is generally a safe buy. Any
decent hi-fi amplifier should have a life span of at least 20 years.

Hope that helps.
